Volume of a Trapezoid Tutors A trapezoid is a 2-dimensional geometric figure which has one pair of parallel sides and one pair of non-parallel sides. We can calculate the area and the perimeter of a trapezoid but it is not possible to calculate the volume of a trapezoid because we need 3 dimensions to find the volume and a trapezoid does not have 3 dimensions. However, a trapezoidal prism consists of congruent trapezoidal bases and we can find the volume of this prism because it is a 3-dimensional structure. Example 1: Calculate the volume of a trapezoidal prism whose parallel sides of base trapezoid are 3m and 6m, height of the base is 4m andlength of the prism is 8m Given: length of the base parallel sides == a= 3m and b= 6m Height of the base trapezoid, h = 4m Length of the prism, l = 8m Volume of a trapezoidal prism, V = 1/2 *(a + b)* h * l This gives, volume, V= 1/2* 9m* 4m* 8m= 144m3 Therefore, volume of the given trapezoidal prism is 144m3 Example 2: Calculate the volume of a trapezoidal prism whose parallel sides of base trapezoid are 4m and 7m, height of the base is 5m and length of the prism is 10m. Given: length of the base parallel sides == a= 4m and b= 7m Height of the base trapezoid, h = 5m Length of the prism, l = 10m Volume of a trapezoidal prism, V = 1/2 *(a + b)* h * l This gives, volume, V= 1/2* 11m* 5m* 10m= 275m3 Therefore, volume of the given trapezoidal prism is 275m3

Solve Absolute Value Equation Absolute value of any number whether its negative or positive represents only its positive version. Absolute value is actually the distance of the number from the center and is denoted by | |(modulus sign). Hence absolute value is never negative. Absolute value is the magnitude of the number not the sign. Absolute value equation contains the variables and numbers with the absolute value sign in it. Example 1: Solve for the variable x in the equation | x 2| = 4? Solution: Given is the equation |x 2| = 4. Here the unknown variable which needs to be solved for is x. First step: The absolute value gives two cases; x 2 = 4; x 2 = -4. Adding 2 on both sides of the given equation. (x 2) + 2 = 4 + 2; (x 2) + 2 = -4 + 2 This gives x = 6; x = -2. Hence the solution is x = 6 or -2. Example 2: Solve for the variable x in the equation | x 3| = 5? Solution: Given is the equation |x 3| = 5. Here the unknown variable which needs to be solved for is x. First step: The absolute value gives two cases; x 3 = 5; x 3 = -5. Adding 3 on both sides of the given equation. When Should You Retake a College Course Now that grades are posted for the spring semester, some students may have discovered that they didnt do quite as well in a class as they expected to when they registered. Maybe you realized several weeks into the course that the material wasnt clear, or maybe you were doing fine, but you didnt perform well on the final. Whatever the reason for your subpar grade, you may now be thinking about retaking the class next semester. Consider these questions to help you determine when you should retake a college course: Will your school factor a second grade into your GPA? Colleges have different policies regarding students who retake classes. Some schools will replace your first grade in the course with your second grade, effectively erasing your first (and hopefully lower) grade from your GPA. However, your college may average your grades instead or not offer grade replacement at all. Before you decide to retake a class, ask about your schools grade policy, and then decide if retaking the college course will truly reflect the academic improvementthat you would like it to. Is the class a requirement for a major, a career, or a graduate school, and did you achieve the minimum grade necessary to fulfill that requirement? Many majors require a grade of C or better in all related coursework, and certain graduate schools may set minimum grades for prerequisite undergraduate coursework. If you met the minimum graderequirement even if the grade wasnt your ideal grade you may not be allowed to retake the class. In this case, it may be best to move on and to search for other ways to improve your GPA or application. These threestudy tipsmay be able to help you in your future college exams. Were there unforeseen circumstances that led to your poor performance in the course, and are those circumstances resolved? Sometimes, events in your personal life like a death in your family or a major illness can prevent you from doing your best. In this instance, consider whether you have recovered enough to improve your grade if you retake the class. Many times, one low grade can be explained and forgiven in interviews or applications, and it is not worth performing poorly again if the extenuating circumstances that led to the first bad grade have not been resolved. Do you think that you are able to master the course material? If you took a course that was well beyond your academic capabilities, retaking that class may do little to improve your performance. If youre still interested in the subject but arent sure that you can handle the caliber of coursework expected, consider looking for lower-level classes within the same discipline instead of retaking the first course. (This is especially useful with electives.) Is the class offered soon after the last time you took it? Even though you may not have done very well in the course, chances are that you learned some of the material involved. Retaking the classas soon as possible will put you in the best position to succeed. If the course isnt offered again for a year or more, consider whether retaking it is worth potentially forgetting any information you may already have about the subject. If you do decide to retake the course trying a different note-taking formatmay alsohelp you succeed the second time around.

UCAS Workshop

UCAS Workshop We like things to be fair, so we were excited when The Access Project asked us to run a workshop to help with university applications in schools where most kids don’t go to university. Research done by the Sutton Trust suggests that even amongst schools with identical A-level results, some are much more likely to get pupils accepted into a top university than others. [1] One of the reasons for this is to the all-important UCAS form. The Sutton Trust research found that independent school applicants are more likely to submit carefully crafted UCAS statements. State school applicants, by contrast, appeared to receive less help composing their statement, and often struggle to draw on suitable work and life experience. [2] Clients often engage tutors to help their child with their university admission. So, we have joined forces with the Access Project to run a series of workshops to ensure some of London’s most deprived students have the best chance of creating a winning UCAS application. The workshop includes sessions on the choices available to students and includes support for individuals in composing their personal statement. We are immensely proud of the sixteen Tutorfair educators who are taking part and wish the students they help a huge good luck in their applications. Tutorfairs Foundation On-Demand Review

Tutorfair's Foundation On-Demand Review As one of the Founders of Tutorfair, my mission has been to make tutoring fair for all.      Last  week the Foundation signed off the final report of our pilot study for Tutorfair On-Demand with Nesta, so I thought it would be a good time to reflect on the  learning we’ve seen from this pilot. Why did we start On-Demand? We created On-Demand for Nesta, the innovation foundation. They had noticed in 2016 that volunteering projects were making a real difference in education but were not reaching large  areas of the country.  We took up the challenge because we thought the solution might also fix an issue for the Tutorfair Foundation.   We had lots of tutors trying to volunteer  who we were unable to place  most in our projects with schools.  The On-Demand app would let  volunteers anywhere in the country answer questions whenever they wanted. What have we found? Fast forward to 2019 and we now have a real live service that works. Pupils from schools who sign-up can access a tutor for GCSE maths instantly on their phones.  They feel happy with the help they get and their teacher can see what they struggled with. Volunteers can help when and where they are able to, without needing to make complex commitments. The Foundation team can train the volunteers online and monitor for quality and safeguarding.   Now that hundreds of students and volunteers and 30 schools have used it we have loads of great feedback on how to make it all better. What’s most exciting is that we’re starting to find from our small sample of students in the pilot that students who used the app more frequently saw some grade improvement.   One of the most important things moving forward to more schools and more students will be proving this result to be statistically significant. What next? As we wrap up the pilot study we are really excited with the potential for On Demand.  We feel confident that it will  be shown make a real difference to grades when we can do a full proof of concept.   This would mean for our volunteers that they are making a measurable contribution to addressing educational inequality.  When we can prove that we make an impact, there is so much potential to extend to new students and subjects and for this to be a whole new way for teachers and tutors to work together. How to select a topic for GCSE English spoken language component The GCSE English Skills component is now called spoken language. It's mandatory but does not count towards your GCSE grade. However, it's assessed separately at Distinction, Merit, Pass or Ungraded. It's an individual talk of approximately 5 minutes, with questions and applicable in all exam boards. For many students, this can be a daunting prospect, and five minutes can feel like a long period to fill even when you are speaking about a subject you are knowledgeable about. The key requirements to think about are: Presentations must be formal but can take a wide variety of forms, including talks, debates, and speeches. Presentations must be planned and organised and agreed on in advance with your teacher. You can use pre-prepared notes, but this is not a requirement. After the presentation, you must answer questions about your talk. Teachers are looking for you to demonstrate your presentation skills as well as listen and answer questions about your presentation. While presenting can feel nerve-wracking there are ways you can prepare 1. Choose a subject that you feel comfortable with, and you are already knowledgeable about. This can be a: hobbies, a sport, politics, a book or author you love, football, your culture or religion. The environment, climate change, the news, and even a well-known person can also we a good choice. 2. Bear in mind your presentation is all about communicating information, so you need to think what angle are you going to take that will be of interest. 3. Structure your talk, so it brings up interesting ideas and engages your audience. For example, if you're going to talk about a hobby don't just talk about why you like it, say what it means to you, how it's maybe changed your life, and why you feel it's popular. 4. For ideas watch other talks by teens on YouTube and TedTalks 5. These can help to give you ideas of how to make your short presentation interesting. 6. Practice with family and friends or if you feel shy record yourself on your phone and watch yourself back to improve your technique. 7. If nerves get the better of you breathe and admit to feeling nervous. Your teacher isn't going to mark you down on this. 8. Finally, don't build it up to be bigger than it is. It's five minutes, and though you are marked on it, it doesn't count towards your final GCSE English grade.
